GENERAL FAQs

What is SAM’s primary ministry focus?

We long to see dynamic churches spread across Latin America that transform communities as they embody the Kingdom of God. God has chosen us—broken yet redeemed human beings—to be his agents of transformation. Our presence and witness in communities is a key strategy in building towards our vision. We also focus on church planting and establishing church networks, training godly leaders, discipleship, and enabling transformational initiatives.

Does South America Mission have a denominational affiliation?

South America Mission is an evangelical and interdenominational mission organization. We gladly work with individuals and churches who can affirm Our Beliefs. Our missionaries come from many denominational backgrounds and agree to serve in unity under the authority of the Bible.

How does South America Mission receive its funding?

In faith, we rely on God to provide financially through his people—individuals, church bodies, and foundations—to sustain the work He has entrusted to us. South America Mission is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

What standards of stewardship does South America Mission uphold?

For more than a century, generous supporters like you have made our mission possible. We deeply value the trust you place in us and are committed to honoring that trust through sound financial stewardship and full transparency before God and our partners.

At South America Mission, we undergo an annual audit by an independent CPA firm, and our financial report is available upon request. We also maintain the highest standards of accountability through memberships with Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), Charity Navigator, and Guidestar.

GO FAQs

How do I join the community of South America Mission?

First, complete our Let’s Talk form. This begins a journey of seeking God’s purposes together, with you and your sending church.

How long do missionaries typically serve in Latin America?

We offer internships, residency, mid-term service, and long-term service opportunities. Visit our GO With Us page to learn more.

Does SAM offer short-term opportunities?

Absolutely! While our vision focuses on long-term impact, we also offer opportunities for short-term teams, internships, residency, and mid-term service. Visit our GO With Us page to learn more.

What qualifications do I need to become a missionary with SAM? Are there specific language requirements for serving as a missionary in Latin America?

At SAM, we’re looking for people with a heart for learning and growth, but the most important qualification is being a follower of Jesus Christ. The Great Commission calls each of us to make disciples—whether locally or in different cultures and countries.

Since English is the primary language among our workers, we do require an understanding of English, to ensure you can communicate clearly and effectively. Serving in Latin America also means learning the local language—usually Spanish or Portuguese. We’ll support you with language schools and tutors so you can thrive in your ministry and make a lasting impact.

Do I need a sending church, and what is their role?

Yes, every missionary needs a sending church. We understand that a fellowship of believers may take different forms with various degrees of formality, organization, and involvement in your ministry. Your church’s role is to affirm your calling, commission you, and support you through prayer, encouragement, and spiritual leadership. Our Mobilization and Church Engagement team partners with your church to ensure you are well-equipped and supported for the mission field.

How do I prepare spiritually and practically for missionary work in Latin America?

Begin by praying regularly for Latin America. Invite your friends, family, or small group to pray with you—both for the people you might serve and for clarity in your calling. Developing a strong, personal walk with the Lord is essential. If you’re not already in the habit of studying scripture and living out your faith, now is the time to build that foundation, as it won’t simply start once you’re in a new culture.

We also encourage you to engage in ministry opportunities with Latinos in your local community. This will help you begin learning about the culture and build meaningful connections. Understanding the people and their way of life will go a long way in preparing you for cross-cultural ministry.

Finally, be mindful that as you explore the call to overseas missions, you may experience increased spiritual warfare. Stay grounded in prayer and rely on your support network as you take these steps.

How does a missionary’s salary work, and what is support raising?

Missionaries serving with SAM for longer than a year are typically employees of our mission organization. Once you’re confirmed as an appointee, we help create a budget that includes your monthly salary—this is the amount you’ll raise through support.

Support raising is a faith-driven process built on prayer and relationships. It involves inviting others to partner with you by supporting your ministry through prayer and financial gifts. It’s an opportunity to build a team of people who walk alongside you on this journey, sharing in both the spiritual and practical aspects of your work.

Are SAM missionaries covered by health insurance?

Yes, SAM provides major medical health coverage from the date of departure. We’ll give you more details as you move forward.

How long does it take from the time I apply to the time I leave for the mission field?

Everyone’s journey is different. Some people are ready to go in a few months, and some people are ready in a few years. Timing for your mission journey depends on support raising, family needs, and training. We’ll walk with you through the process.

What kind of support and training do you provide for missionaries going to Latin America?

At SAM, we equip you for the journey ahead through a variety of training and support programs. Every missionary attends GOCO, a one-week training that covers essential topics like support raising, spiritual warfare, member care, and donor relations.

In addition, many of our missionaries attend language school and receive cross-cultural service training to help them thrive in their new environment. Our goal is to ensure you’re fully prepared—spiritually, practically, and relationally—as you step into this calling.

What services are provided to SAM missionaries by the Home Office in Fort Mill?

SAM’s Home Office provides annual IRS reporting, donor receipting, record keeping, and many other tasks to facilitate our team of missionaries on the field. Our communications team also assists with communications training and strategy, branding, newsletters, and email templates.

How will my children be educated if our family serves together in Latin America?

We consider the education of our missionary kids (MKs) to be very important. The answer varies from field to field, and family to family. Some missionary children attend public or private schools on the field, while others are home-schooled.
